About the Grow Your Own program

If you are interested in becoming an early childhood educator, we would love for you to apply! 

Grow Your Own offers a traineeship package, mentoring support and scholarships to Aboriginal people in the Illawarra and Wingecarribee regions.

What is the duration of the traineeship
Traineeships can be full-time or part-time. It is expected a full-time Certificate III traineeship will be completed in 12 to 18 months.

Who will deliver the training?
The program will be delivered by ECTARC, a community owned, not for profit organisation that has successfully managed education and care services in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven for over 34 years.

Program benifits

Successful applicants will receive:

  • $3,000 to assist with completing a Certificate III or a Diploma.
  • The opportunity to work at quality services with qualified educators.
  • Extensive mentoring support throughout the traineeship.
  • Employment with a service for an additional 1.5 years after the traineeship is complete.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible, applicants meet all of the eligibility criteria:

  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
  • Be accepted as such by the community in which you live or have lived.
  • Live in the Illawarra and Wingecarribee regions and be committed to working in those regions.
  • Be interested in pursuing a career in early childhood education to support young mob in their early education.
  • Be committed to do the practical and theoretical components of the traineeship.

Please provide evidence to support your eligibility for the program, this includes:

  • Proof of identity (for example, a driver’s licence)
  • Confirmation of Aboriginality (from a registered Aboriginal community organisation or an incorporated Aboriginal community organisation). 
  • Two documents to support residential address (more details below)
  • An expression of interest (more details below)
